Infectious mononucleosis (also known as Glandular fever) is caused by Epstein Barr virus. Following the infection,IM heterophile antibodies are produced in the patient. TEST Kit used for glandular fever screen, contains latex labelled bovine erythrocyte glycoprotein; IM heterophile antibody binds to this to form a complex that presents as a band in the results window. Test for heterophile antibodies are useful for diagnosis as antibodies are often present as early as the 4th to 6th day of the disease and are always found by th 21st day.

Sample Requirements:

Gross haemolysis and excessive storage will invalidate the results

How result is reported:

Positive or negative

Important Information:

Gross lipaemia will make interpretation difficult thus result may be invalidated
