Comments:

Allergens not routinely held in stock are referred to the Immunology Laboratory,Spire Pathology Services, Edinburgh

Internal Test Code:- SIGE

Description:

Indication: Allergic conditions.

Background: Used to detect IgE to particular allergen(s), when skin prick testing is difficult to perform, unreliable, or contra-indicated, e.g. in very young children, patients with severe eczema or dermographism, patients taking antihistamines and patients where there is a significant risk of anaphylaxis. When total IgE levels are low, specific IgE is likely to be negative, however a strongly positive specific IgE may occur with a normal total IgE. The clinical history is more reliable than the specific IgE result in determining whether symptoms are due to a particular allergen or not. Testing for IgE to very many allergens without clear evidence of clinical significance should be avoided. If specific IgE result for an allergen mix is positive further tests for individual allergens may be performed.

Method: Fluoresence Enzyme Immunoassay (FEIA)

Repeat Frequency: As clinically indicated

Preparation:

None

Vessels and Containers:

Serum gold-top

Sample Requirements:

300µl for the first allergen then 40µl for each subsequent allergen requested. Ensure sufficient sample to allow reflex testing if requesting allergen mixes.
Please provide 2 x 4ml serum samples if multiple specific IgE tests are requested

Interference:

High total IgE increases the incidence of low level false positive specific IgE results.

How result is reported:

Numeric in kUA/L with grade interpretation

Important Information:

If allergen mixes are requested and positive, please note that turnaround time may be extended due to reflex testing.
