Orthopaedic tissue samples

Container:

Turnaround Time:

Minimum of 14 days

Description:

Tissue and fluid samples from prosthetic joints and other orthopaedic samples.

Preparation:

Use aseptic technique

Fully label all sample containers with 4 patient identifiers

Do not send tissue samples in formalin

Vessels and Containers:


Dry tissue in a sterile universal container, or tissue in broth with steel beads

Sample Requirements:

Ensure ALL samples are received in the laboratory with a completed form or electronic request.

When a joint revision is planned, the orthopaedic team need to request a pack of sterile beads and a sterile lunch box from Sterile Services at Frimley Park hospital to send one or more over to the correct site.
Please factor transport time of the containers when planning to take microbiological samples during a revision surgery.

How result is reported:

Tissues:
Interim culture result available after 7 days
Final culture result available after 14 days

Fluids:
Final result available after 5 days

Please clearly state relevant clinical details pertaining to the reasons behind taking the sample i.e. hot/pain/red. Samples without relevant clinical details may be rejected.

Please state on form if the patient has had recent foreign travel or if there is a strong suspicion of high risk pathogens as these pose a risk to laboratory staff.

Transportation and Handling:

Please ensure samples are sent to the laboratory ASAP
Collect samples in appropriate CE marked containers and transport in sealed plastic bag
