Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) was formed at the end of 2016 as a contractual joint venture between five acute NHS Foundation Trusts:
The shared service model is administered by a unitary management and governance structure. Pathology services within the BSPS network provides acute services at each of the four Trusts and GP services in Berkshire, Surrey, Hampshire, West Sussex and South West London which account for the majority of the work of the laboratories.
In addition, laboratory services are provided for private hospitals in Surrey, Hampshire, Hounslow, Richmond and Twickenham and Berkshire. BSPS also receives samples from other NHS Trusts and the independent sectors throughout the UK. BSPS provides Point of Care Analysers to local community Hospitals, CCGs and healthcare service providers nationally.
Established in 1998 from the merger of Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals, the Trust has been on a long journey of development and improvement to its current position as the largest provider of acute hospital services to Surrey residents. It became a Foundation Trust in December 2010. Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of more than 410,000 people living in the boroughs of Runnymede, Spelthorne, Woking and parts of Elmbridge, Hounslow, Surrey Heath and more.
Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust provides NHS hospital services for around 900,000 people across Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey and south Buckinghamshire.\n\nWe brought together Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to create Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust on 1 October 2014.\n\nOur aim is simple. Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest general hospital foundation trusts in the country and the main provider of acute and specialist services for West Berkshire. With 6 sites, the Trust employs approximately 5,500 staff and serves around 1,000,000 people. We provide acute medical and surgical services to Reading, Wokingham and West Berkshire and specialist services such as cancer, dialysis and eye surgery to a wider population across Berkshire and its borders

Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust runs East Surrey Hospital in Redhill and provides a range of services at hospitals in Crawley, Horsham, Caterham and at The Earlswood Centre. It has a growing catchment population of 535,000 residents in east Surrey and northeast West Sussex and is the designated hospital for Gatwick Airport and the local M25 and M23 motorway network. The Trust employs around 5,000 staff delivering vital NHS services.
Berkshire Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) are accredited, by UKAS, to BS EN ISO15189:2012 and BS EN ISO17043:2010 standards.
The repertoire of accredited tests is detailed for each UKAS number and can be found on the UKAS website https://www.ukas.com. Schedules of accreditation available on the UKAS website provide the most up to date information on accredited tests within the BSPS network.
Each UKAS number is assessed annually as a surveillance visit, with a full re-assessment every fourth year by UKAS, to ensure continued compliance. After each successful assessment, a schedule of accredited tests is granted.
