Labkit

Real time Point of Care results where and when they are needed.

As part of the NHS’ five year forward plan Labkit was created by NHS Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) to improve patient care by transforming pathology testing in urgent and emergency care.

Labkit is designed to be used in a variety of settings outside hospitals to deliver high quality results under the guidance of an accredited pathology laboratory.

We provide an innovative solution which will support the diagnosis and treatment plans of patients, at the point of their care in the primary care setting, be that the GP surgery, urgent care centre or even in their own homes.

The solution

Labkit is a customizable suite of Point of Care Testing (POCT) devices that allow healthcare professionals to deliver mobile, laboratory standard test results.

The Labkit POCT bag is designed to be used in any mobile setting to enhance clinical decision-making, accelerate time to treatment, reduce unnecessary hospital attendance and inconvenience to patients.

Point-of-care testing by paramedics using a portable laboratory: an evaluation

The paramedics used the bag in 25% of patient interactions, typically three times every 24 hours.

Having POCT results available at the time of paramedic assessment reduced conveyance to the emergency department by 21%.

There was also a 10% rise in admission of patients where pathology results indicated problems that required urgent treatment which would otherwise have gone unnoticed.

Overall, 31% of conveyance decisions were changed as a direct consequence of the Labkit results.

Patients reported high levels of satisfaction, and paramedics said it added value in 97% of cases where it was used to support decision-making.
